On May 2nd, 2023, Mackenzie Moore, the 2022-2023 Research Assistant to the IAHSJ, hosted a student-centered gathering with a screening of two films from the Africa World Documentary Film Festival, titled “DANCEDANCE/RE♢VOLUTION” and “The Rise of the African Female Drummer.” The event was held in the Prison Arts Collective room, and provided attendees with pizza. Both films are centered on the themes of arts and social justice, and featured an introduction from the festival’s director, Dr. ‘Niyi Coker, and discussion with the director of DANCEDANCE/RE♢VOLUTION, Mark Freeman. The students who attended came from across colleges, and the discussion between them and Coker and Freeman was lively and enriching as a result. It was the perfect expression of the Insitute's core value to serve as a hub for arts and social justice within the university community, and we look forward to putting on more events like this in the future.
